Thymaya Payne is a writer, director, and filmmaker. Thymaya graduated from the University of Chicago and the directing program of the American Film Institute. His first feature film was a documentary about Somali pirates called Stolen Seas. When it was released, the film was hailed as “magnificent” by the New York Times, and Variety wrote, “its years’ worth of visits to one of the world’s most volatile hot zones, is as exciting as its content”. Stolen Seas won the Boccolino D’oro at the Locarno Film festival critics week and enjoys a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2015, Thymaya co-wrote and produced the independent film Live Cargo directed by Logan Sandler, starring Keith Stanfield and Dree Hemingway. Live Cargo premiered in competition at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival and internationally at the Warsaw Film Festival among others and had its theatrical debut in spring 2017. Thymaya was also a producer on several independent films including Justin Kelly’s, King Cobra starring James Franco, and Christian Slater. Thymaya also co-wrote a short film called Across Our Lands, directed by Fiona Godivier, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. Thymaya continues to write, direct, and produce various projects. He also engages in an active visual arts practice, which incorporates narrative storytelling with experimental video, installation, and painting. Thymaya wrote the novella “C7” while living in Mexico City during 2017. He now lives in Venice California.

 

Thymaya Payne es escritor, director y cineasta. Obtuvo grados de la Universidad de Chicago y el programa de dirección del American Film Institute. Su primer largometraje fue un documental acerca de piratas somalíes titulado Stolen Seas (Mares Robados). Al estrenarse, la película fue aclamada y calificada de “magnífica” por el New York Times; la revista Variety escribió “Son como años de visitas a una de las zonas calientes más volátiles del mundo, es tan excitante como su contenido”. Stolen Seas ganó el Boccolino de Oro en la semana de críticos del festival de cine de Locarno, y goza de un rating de 100% en Rotten Tomatoes. En 2015, Thymaya co-escribió y produjo la película independiente Live Cargo (Carga Viva) dirigida por Logan Sandler, y protagonizada por Keith Stanfield and Dree Hemingway. Live Cargo se estrenó en competencia en el festival de cine de Tribeca en 2016, e internacionalmente en el festival de cine de Varsovia, estrenándose posteriormente en cines comerciales en la primavera del 2017. Ha también producido diversos proyectos y películas independientes incluyendo King Cobra, de Justin Kelly, protagonizada por James Franco y Christian Slater.  Thymaya co-escribió un cortometraje titulado Across Our Lands (A Través de Nuestras Tierras), dirigido por Fiona Godivier, que se estrenó en el festival de cine de Cannes en 2017. Continúa escribiendo, dirigiendo y produciendo varios proyectos, y mantiene una práctica activa en artes visuales, en la que incorpora narrativa junto con video experimental, instalación y pintura. Cuando vivía en México en 2017, escribió una novella titulada “C7“. Actualmente vive en Venice, California.
